Activities in Queensland

Towering at 1,593 metres in height, the Mount Bellenden Ker is identified as Queensland’s second highest mountain. It is nestled in the area of the Wooroonooran National Park, which is acclaimed as a World Heritage site, between the towns of Cairns and Innisfail. It was already discovered in 1770 by a lieutenant, who goes by the name of James Cook, but it was during the year 1819 when it was actually given a name. It was dubbed in honour of a botanist named John Bellenden Ker Gawler. This mountain is one-third of a coastal range alongside with the highest self-supporting natural pyramid, Walsh’s Pyramid and Queensland’s highest mountain, Mount Bartle Frere. It is bounded with verdant tropical trees and shrubbery that make up the dense rainforests, where various species of reptiles and mammals that are in the brink of extinction thrive. It is a popular destination among experienced mountain climbers and even the bold, aspiring ones as well. A breathtaking 360-degree view of the Atherton Tableland awaits the successful hikers.

The weather condition in this mountain is usually wet. At one point, it was considered the wettest point in the whole of Australia basing from the amount of rainfall. It is not really recommended to ascend this mountain on such circumstance because the huge boulders next to the hiking trail could be extremely slippery and potentially dangerous. On the contrary, during the summer season, it is also considered as one of the hottest area with temperature ranging from 30°C - 40°C. Mountain climbers are expected to be of good physical shape because the hiking trail is exhausting and tricky at the same time. There are markings that are positioned next to the foot path but some are very hard to distinguish. It is suggested for first time climbers to hire a knowledgeable guide to avoid the risk of getting lost in the woods. Wearing of proper hiking attire is also advisable for utmost protection against bruises and the likes. Other important necessities to bring are sufficient supply of drinking water and sunscreen.

To access the Mount Bellender Ker Range, you can either drive to the eastern side via Highway A1 passing through Gordonvale, Babinda, and Innisfail or by taking the Palmerston Highway to get to the southern end, which is amidst the towns of Innisfail and Ravenshoe. Another option is to travel the smaller highways in the direction of Youngaburra that will take you to the western side of the range.

After sweating out in the mountain, it would be really nice to reward yourself by spending the night at the luxurious Bramston Beach House. This beachfront home has a very relaxing atmosphere, which is probably what your sore body will be yearning for after spending two days in the wilderness. It is located within the proximity so getting there is rather an easy task. To reach the Bramston Beach House, drive straight ahead of the Bruce Highway and then turn off at Evans Road. From this point, drive until the end of the road where this five-star accommodation is sited.
