Town of Babinda

The word “Babinda” allegedly comes from the Aboriginal word “binda” which literally translates as “waterfall”. It is only reasonable to say that this town experiences large amounts of rains for the entire year basing from this definition. In fact, it has been recognized as the wettest area in the whole of Australia, with more than 4200 mm of rainfall every succeeding year. In spite of this, Babinda is a wonderful place to see the sights, given that history and culture is particularly rich in this township.

Awarded as the Friendliest Town in the 2001 Tidy Towns Competition, the small town of Babinda is every weary traveller’s dream destination. It is a humble settlement, which is mostly bounded by sugar mills, that promotes tourism among tourists since it is adjacent to several tourist spots in Queensland. An endorsed tourist information centre is positioned on the bends of Bruce Highway and Monro Street. The striking ancient blue building, which is made entirely of wood, was a former local police station. Nowadays, its primary function it to provide tourists with every kind of assistance they need especially when it concerns the infamous hot spots that surround “The Umbrella Town".

Situated at the south of Cairns, this settlement provides easy access to activity sites that include swimming, camping, and hiking. It is surrounded with thriving and virgin rainforests that house various flora and fauna species that nature trippers would find delightful. The Mount Bartle Frere and the Mount Bellenden Ker, which are two of the most elevated mountains in Queensland, are sited within its immediate location. Visitors who are experienced mountain climbers more often than not make it their goal to ascend these mountains whenever they are in the area. The hiking trail is said to be very tricky and challenging however first timers are also encouraged to try the experience.

Aside from these towering heights, the Babinda Boulders and the Josephine Falls are also often visited by tourists and locals alike. Those who like to experience a piece of nature in a more relaxed manner come to these nature parks to go swimming in the water pools or barbecuing in the camping sites. There are also observation platforms that are designed for those who opt to admire the scenic view instead of traversing the massive granite boulders that are abundant in both nature parks.

And then of course, there’s the Bramston Beach, which is patronised by those who want some quiet time while getting a whiff of the ocean breeze. It is the ideal vacation spot for beach side campers as there are several camping areas on the shore itself. There are also a number of hotels that can accommodate those who would like to experience five-star treatment.
